The Arkansas AFS Chapter is pleased to announce an upcoming workshop open to all AR AFS members and focused on crayfish identification skills. Crayfish are a critical component of Arkansas's aquatic ecosystems. However, identifying species in the field presents unique taxonomic challenges and many resource professionals and students have had little formal training in distinguishing among regional crayfish species. This workshop will focus on key morphological characteristics, taxonomic keys, and field identification techniques to help you confidently identify our numerous native species. Instruction will feature a mix of lecture and hands-on live-animal demonstrations.
Group field opportunities to put into practice skills learned during the workshop (e.g., translocation events) will likely become available later this fall. Workshop participants will be added to a mailing list for notification of these events.
This Crayfish ID Workshop will take place from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Wednesday October 14th at the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service building on the UA Little Rock campus (2301 S University Ave, Little Rock, AR 72204).
This workshop will be co-led by Dustin Lynch (ANHC), Maxwell Hartman (AGFC), and Jeff Quinn (AGFC). The cost is $40 for professionals and $10 for students and includes lunch. Use this link to sign up.
